Beginner’s Guide to Assisted Stretching

Written by StretchLab Blog | Aug 28, 2026

If your body feels stiff, tight, or stuck in place more often than not, you're not alone. Assisted stretching is quickly becoming a go-to wellness practice for people who want to move better and feel better, proactively.

What Is Assisted Stretching?

Assisted stretching is a hands-on practice in which a trained Flexologist executes a series of targeted stretches designed to improve your flexibility and range of motion. Unlike stretching alone, a Flexologist uses their hands to support your body, helping you try new stretch positions at an achievable depth that you likely couldn't achieve on your own. Sometimes referred to as stretch therapy, this practice combines expert technique with an understanding of the muscular system to help your body move more freely. It's a guided, personalized experience, not a generic routine.

How Is It Different From Stretching on Your Own?

Your body has a natural protective mechanism called the stretch reflex, which tightens muscles when it senses they're being stretched too far, too fast. This reflex often limits how deeply you can stretch on your own. A Flexologist is trained to work with this reflex, gradually and safely guiding your body past that natural limit to achieve a deeper, more effective stretch. Assisted stretching also differs from yoga, which centers on self-guided movement and breath, and from massage, which primarily targets soft tissue relief rather than range of motion.

Who Is Assisted Stretching For?

Assisted stretching is designed for a wide range of guests, regardless of age, body type, or activity level:

  • Desk workers dealing with chronic tightness in the hips, shoulders, or lower back from long hours of sitting.
  • Active adults and athletes looking to improve performance, recover faster, and reduce injury risk.
  • Older adults working to maintain joint mobility and independence in everyday movement.
  • Anyone experiencing everyday aches and pains that make simple tasks feel more difficult than they should.

No matter your starting point, assisted stretching can be adapted to meet your body where it is.

What to Expect in Your First Session

Your first visit to StretchLab starts with a pre-assessment to identify your goals, activity level, and any areas of tightness or discomfort. From there, a Flexologist will conduct a personal movement assessment to thoroughly analyze your mobility, stability, posture, and symmetry. Then, you'll lie comfortably on a bench while your Flexologist guides you through a customized stretching routine tailored to your body's needs.

No prior stretching experience or special equipment is required. Simply wear comfortable clothing and let your Flexologist guide your body through each movement. Both our 25- and 50-minute sessions provide a personalized, full-body stretch, with the 50-minute session allowing for a deeper stretch based on your individual needs and goals.

Above all, assisted stretching should never be painful. Your Flexologist will work within your comfort level, adjusting pressure and depth as needed throughout the session.
