The best golfers are actively seeking out mobility exercises and stretching to help improve their performance. With an increased interest in mobility, there is an overflow of tips and tricks on how to improve this ability. It can be confusing and even frustrating shifting through all this information, trying to determine what will actually work. But every golfer needs to know that there’s one mobility secret that can have a huge impact on and off the course!
Why Mobility Exercises Are Important for Golfers
Mobility plays a large role when it comes to sustained health and wellness. It’s the foundation for balance, coordination, range of motion, and overall physical movement. For a golfer, limited mobility can lead to poor range of motion, lower back pain, and increased risk of injury. This is why golfers have become increasingly interested in mobility exercises.
Mobility exercises are designed to help increase the range of motion of a joint. A common mobility exercise you’re likely already aware of is stretching. Stretching is the act of extending or lengthening a muscle or group of muscles to improve flexibility and range of motion. In addition to improving mobility, stretching can also help reduce joint pain, increase energy, and reduce stress and tension, making it a favorable mobility exercise on and off the course!
Start with this stretch
An effective stretch that can help with mobility and lower back pain is the supine twist. To do this stretch, start by lying on your back with your knees bent and feet flat on the floor. Extend your arms out to the side in a “T” position. Slowly bend your left knee up towards the sky, keeping your right leg flat on the ground. Keep your shoulders on the ground as you gently bring your left knee across the right side of your body, trying to reach the floor as closely as you can. Stay here for 20 to 30 seconds before returning to the starting position. Repeat this on the opposite side to get an even lower back stretch!
The Mobility Secret Every Golfer Needs to Know
Mobility exercises such as stretching can be an effective performance and recovery tool for any golfer. But the truth is, if a golfer wants to see results, this needs to be done consistently, and properly. Thankfully, the secret to achieving this can easily be accessible and even effortless! If a golfer wants to improve their mobility, they should regularly seek out assisted stretching sessions with a trained professional.
Assisted stretching involves the assistance of a partner to help further stretch the muscles. The person conducting the stretch, which should be a reputable organization-certified or trained professional, moves the person’s limbs through the stretches and controls the movement to achieve deeper stretches. This allows for a more targeted stretch, potentially accessing muscles and areas that may be difficult to reach when stretching alone.
This form of stretching is especially beneficial for mobility as it allows for the effective incorporation of advanced stretching techniques such as proprioceptive neuromuscular facilitation (PNF). PNF helps the muscles get into a deeper stretch, allowing for better improvement in flexibility and range of motion. Through assisted stretching, PNF can be easily applied to help achieve greater range of motion and increased flexibility, making it the ideal mobility exercise for golfers!
